Case session

The "Between Paris and Moscow. Alexandra Bychkova and Sergey Koltsov" exhibition served as a continuation of the "Muscovite: Women of the Soviet Capital in the 1920s-1930s" exhibition, one of whose protagonists was Alexandra Bychkova (later Koltsova-Bychkova) — an artist who captivated contemporary audiences with her shimmering textile panels and virtuoso embroidery works. She was also the wife of renowned Soviet sculptor Sergey Koltsov.

The exhibition presents two retrospectives, two creative trajectories that constantly intersect and diverge. Viewers can explore each protagonist’s work individually while simultaneously discovering their points of connection. The artistic output of Alexandra Koltsova-Bychkova and Sergey Koltsov combines multiple techniques, schools, and movements: Stroganov-style decorative art meets VKHUTEMAS formal school; the fascination with Henri Matisse and Paul Cézanne coexists with Sandro Botticelli and Albrecht Dürer; caricatures stand alongside lyrical portraits; and sculpture blends with painting and embroidery.
