Roundtable Discussion

In 2022, ICOM adopted a new definition of museums: "Non-profit, permanent institutions in the service of society that research, collect, conserve, interpret, and exhibit tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible, and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally, and with community participation, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection, and knowledge exchange."

This definition highlights community involvement as a critical factor in modern museum development. While museums have embraced visitor-centric approaches since the late 20th century, many still rely on outdated practices, technologies, and mindsets. Museum-community collaboration is mutually beneficial — provided both parties clearly understand the advantages from the outset.

  • What key elements should inform a museum’s strategic community engagement plan?
  • How do interaction methods vary across museum types?
  • Which distinct communication formats effectively reach different audience segments?
